The spine is a complicated structure that allows for motion while also providing strength. Fluid, smooth movement is made possible by the proper functioning of the neck and spine. Common activities such as turning, bending, and stretching, however, become cruelly out of reach when the spine is deformed, injured, or diseased. Over 80% of adults will suffer from serious back or neck discomfort at some point in their lives.

HOW DOES THE SPINE WORK ?

The spinal column is made up of 24 tiny bones (vertebrae) that are piled on top of each other. A soft, gel-like cushion called a disc sits between each vertebra, absorbing pressure and preventing the bones from grinding against each other. Ligament groups connect each vertebra to the others. Ligaments link bones together, while tendons link muscles to bones. Muscles are also attached to the vertebrae by tendons. Facet joints are genuine joints in the spinal column, just like knees, elbows, and other joints. The facet joints connect the vertebrae together and allow them to move against one another.

  • It protects the spinal cord (which connects nerves to the brain)
  • It provides the support needed to walk upright
  • It enables the torso to bend
  • It supports the head
  • The cervical spine is sometimes known as the neck. The skull is connected to the rest of the spine by seven cervical vertebrae (doughnut-shaped bones).
  • The thoracic part of the spine starts at the shoulders and extends to the end of the rib cage. The upper back has 12 vertebrae with shock-absorbing discs between them.
  • The thoracic portion of the spine is typically affected by scoliosis.
  • The lumbar area, also known as the lower back, is made up of five vertebrae. These are the biggest vertebrae in the spine, separated by discs. Scoliosis can also develop in the lumbar region.
  • The sacrum is a wedge-shaped portion of the spine that lays at the top of the pelvis. It is made up of five vertebrae that come together.
  • The coccyx, often known as the tailbone, is made up of four vertebrae.
  • Vertebrae are 33 doughnut-shaped bones that make up the spine. Each vertebra has a letter and a number that corresponds to its position in the spine.
  • Discs – A spongy cartilage, or disc, sits between each pair of vertebrae. Intervertebral discs serve as shock absorbers. Between the vertebrae, there are spongy discs.

WHY SRI BALAJI ORTHOPEDICS SPINE TEAM?

The Sri Balaji Spine Team performs around 3,000 spine procedures each year. Degeneration of the cervical and lumbar discs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spinal deformity, tumours, trauma, and instability are all treated with these techniques.

HOW DO I KNOW SPINE SURGERY IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Arthritis, degenerative wear and tear of the joints and discs, as well as a range of other abnormalities, can all damage the spine, causing back or neck pain, numbness, and weakness. The leg and foot can be affected by difficulties in the low back or lumbar spine, whereas the arms and hands might be affected by problems in the cervical spine of the neck.

The treatment of the spine in today’s world is quite complicated. Patients should seek out highly skilled experts, such as the fellowship-trained specialists at the Sri Balaji Orthopaedic Institute Spine Team, to assess if surgery is required.

Sri Balaji Hospitals is a 35 bedded Multispeciality hospital located on the highway in Nolambur Chennai.
